¡Esa es mi rola! ¡Esa rola está a toda madre! ¡Ta’chida esa rola! If you’ve ever uttered or been told any of these lines, you more than likely already know what this word means: rola. Rola, as in that music track, that song, that single playing on the radio… that you really do enjoy.
This week in honor of the big old pachanga taking place in Miami I’m dedicating today’s mexi-vocabulario word of the day to the universal language of music. No matter how different we may feel from one another, the truth is there’s nothing like a good rola to bring us together. La música makes us want to move, it moves us in so many different ways, and sometimes, when it’s just right, it transcends all borders, languages and cultures, to make us understand how conocidos we all actually are to one another.
For me, one of the songs that has always made me feel this way is Paloma Negra. It’s a little dark and sad, but who hasn’t had their heart broken by life and felt all of the heartache within these lyrics. My favorite rendition is the one by Lila Downs.
¡Esta es mi rola! Which one is yours?
I’m always on the hunt for new mexi-vocabulario.
What other words would you like me to include in the mexi-vocabulario? If you have one that you would recommend please share it with me here.
Writer’s Disclaimer: When I say mexi-vocabulario I don’t necessarily mean these words are exclusively Mexican, or only used by Mexicans. This is simply an expression of how they were introduced to me in our Mexican Spanish.
