Yes, the same film starring Edward James Olmos, Lou Diamond Phillips, Jenni Rivera, Chingo Bling, Baby Bash and newcomer Gina Rodriguez, is set to open the New York International Latino Film Festival (NYILFF) on August 14th. Filly Brown tells the story of Maria Jose “Majo” Tonorio (Rodriguez), an aspiring rap artist, who struggles with staying true to herself while trying to get her mother (Jenni Rivera) out of jail. I’ve actually been waiting to see this one. According to reports from this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Gina Rodriguez is the breakout star in the film.
Still. I’d like to check out Jenni’s acting chops for myself.
This interview with several of Filly Brown’s stars is pretty cool too:
Other films premiering at NYILFF include Elliot Loves; Lemon, Closing Night; and The Girl is in Trouble. Get full details about the Film Fest at NYLatinoFilm.
