Congrats to Balboa Park in San Diego on turning 150 years old this year! It was first inaugurated in 1868 when the City of San Diego reserved 1,400 acres of land for what would become the city’s undisputed heart and home to many of its must-see museums and tourist attractions today.
I have been there once so far. It was a few years ago now, when I was on a business trip. What I remember most about the space is how big and bold it is.
My time on that trip was pretty limited so all I had time for was a quick walk around a very small part of the park. It kind of reminded me of the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle in San Juan,Texas, which my family spent a lot of time visiting growing up. I don’t honestly remember the basilica itself that well anymore, but the white stucco and colorful flowers at Balboa took me back to a lot of beloved childhood memories.
It’s funny how at any moment that can happen to us. We are creatures capable of recollecting and reminiscing after all.
No sé, tengo ganas de ver a la iglesia de San Juan otra vez.
